Initially subtitled simply as “A monthly music magazine,” and from vol. 4 no. 2 as “The musician’s viewpoint,” Crescendo was founded by editor Tony Scott as “the first fully-professional magazine produced specifically for musicians and would-be musicians.” As such, each issue contains a mixture of practical articles on instrumental technique, repertoire, arranging, and orchestration, along with musical news, profiles of musicians, record reviews, and interviews. Much of the focus was on bands and combos in England, specifically in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and elsewhere. Both British and American musicians are featured and discussed and reports from Commonwealth nations regularly appear. Following the March 1967 issue, the magazine was retitled Crescendo International (forthcoming to RIPM Jazz).
