Bulletin du Hot Club Lyonnais

The Bulletin du Hot Club Lyonnais was an 8 page typescript publication distributed exclusively to the members of the Hot Club de Lyon. For a short period of three months during the spring of 1946, writers used the majority of the space to discuss different formations and soloists who were playing or had recently played at the Hot Club. Inserted between these articles are short lists of upcoming activities, lists of recordings, and news from abroad.

The editorials contain an interesting case study of the dynamics between jazz lovers. The writers recorded most ardently their frustrations with the lack of enthusiasm among the Hot Club members, writing plainly, “dégelez-vous et tout ira mieux.”1 They also struggle to understand why the Hot Club members were more motivated to hear live performances rather than the rare discs played during group listening sessions. One author wrote that it was “preuve d’une incompréhension totale de notre musique.”2 The inter-club debate between the “right way” to appreciate jazz is demonstrative of the fact that even those who shared a love of jazz disagreed about how to interact with it.
