Jazz Today

Jazz Today was a side project of Metronome’s publishers Ned and John W. Bitner. Jazz Today displayed a more pure editorial focus on jazz than Metronome at that time, which seemed to be attempting to diversify into other musical genres. As noted by Bill Coss, editor of both publications in his introductory statement in Jazz Today, “Most jazz magazines are really jazz-and magazines. They combine pops and jazz and other aspects of the entertainment/music business. Of course, there is a reason and honesty in that approach: there is an inter-connection.” Coss summarized the purpose of Jazz Today as simply its title: jazz as it was then played, in all of its genres, styles, locales, and practices.

Each of the thirteen published issues of Jazz Today was divided into large rubrics: “Jazzorama” which includes small items, contributed by Metronome writers; feature articles, usually including a formula of articles “Jazz Old,” “Jazz New,” “Jazz Borrowed,” and “Jazz Blue.” Record and performance reviews conclude issues. Special themed issues – Christmas (December 1956), Annual Awards (January 1947), Jazz Pianists (March), Histories of Jazz (April), Jazz Records (May), Jazz Festivals (August), Big Bands (September) – appear.  Records were reviewed by Coss and Jack Maher; the Jazz Festival in Newport receives sizable attention.
