The Lightning Express is the continuation of The Arhoolie Occasional, a publication of Arhoolie Records in Berkeley, California. The title change came from the artist R. Crumb who designed the cover image – in homage to Lightnin’ Hopkins – and Chris Strachwitz decided to keep the title. As with the previous publication, The Lightning Express provides information on the various recordings and musicians on Arhoolie Records, including blues, Cajun, Texas-Mexico borderland music, Zydeco, traditional jazz and ragtime, Appalachia, and other American folk musics.
