The New Baton was a continuation of The Baton (Detroit, Chicago, 1940-1943?). With a new editor, Lyle K. Engel, and previous editor Tim Gayle as Associate Editor, The New Baton printed eleven issues between June 1944 and November 1945. Published by Movie Songs Inc., the editorial focus was on popular song and the music industry from New York to Hollywood.
Each issue contains a group of feature articles on singers, songwriters, musicians, and big band leaders, along with regular columns on Hollywood, radio, the recording industry, and general musical news. Interspersed are the lyrics to popular songs and copious advertising. Although no reason is given for the magazine’s cessation, the number of pages per issue significantly shrank by the end of 1945 with significantly fewer advertisements.
