The New York Jazz Gazette

The New York Jazz Gazette was the product of the jazz writer and drummer Louis K. McMillan, Jr. Published in a tabloid, newsprint format, the masthead declares “There’s a human side to jazz / We cover it.” McMillan frequently refers to this motto, declaring the Gazette’s mission “TO TELL THE STORY THE WAY THE ‘DUES PAYERS’ WANT THEM TOLD … without any critical, ‘authoritative,’ analytical ‘BS’ !!!!” [Vol. 1, no. 2: 15, formatting original]. McMillan was also the primary writer for the Gazette, providing articles on musicians, the jazz scene in New York, new records, and news in a positive, uplifting manner.

Two other issues are known to have been published, a June-August 1976 issue and a volume 2 no. 1 in 1977. Should these issues be made available, they will be added to the RIPM Jazz collection.
