Oh! Play that Thing

The organ of the San Francisco Record Society, the title of Oh! Play that Thing was suggested by member Edward Mello in a contest for the publication’s title. A total of ten issues were published, eight between July 1948 and January 1950 and an additional two in 1952 in a typescript format with hand-drawn covers. Edited by Stuart Johnson and Perry Perriman, Oh! Play that Thing declared editorial neutrality concerning jazz styles and genres, with discussions ranging from early jazz to bebop. However, contemporaneous debates seeped into discussions, with accusations of mouldy figs and progressivism. Articles on jazz abroad — Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands — are a feature.
