Riffs was a five-issue magazine devoted to jazz and blues in north Texas, a region encompassing Dallas, Arlington, Fort Worth, and Denton. Edited by Les Ross, much of the focus of Riffs is on the numerous clubs in the region, ranging from small piano bars to large venues. Performances at the numerous universities with jazz programs – North Texas State University (later University of North Texas), University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University – are regularly noted. Regular contributors included Bob Darden and Duane Martin; record reviews and jazz radio columns appear in each issue.
