Sabin's Discount Records

The first in a line of publications which would eventually become JazzTimes, Sabin’s Discount Records was a free coupon and information flier published by Ira Sabin, a record seller with a store located at 3203 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E. in Washington, D.C., at the time one of the premier record shops for jazz in the United States. It appears that three undated issues were published, two likely in 1970 and one in January of 1971.

Each issue featured a column by Sabin titled “Jazz Exposure” which surveyed recent recordings and trends in jazz. Other contributors included Felix Grant, a disc jockey on WMAL; Paul Anthony of the Jazz Unlimited program on WRC radio; Benjamin Harrison of the Left Bank Jazz Society (Washington D.C. branch); and “Hoppy” Adams Wann, a DJ on WANN and WXTC. Coupons and advertisements for Sabin’s Discount Records store, along with other local stores, take up the remainder.
