Upbeat

A spin-off publication of Down Beat, Upbeat was a short-lived, eight issue magazine focused on music education at the high school and collegiate level. With editorial staff drawn from Down Beat – Glenn Burrs as editor, Carl Cons as managing editor – Upbeat focused on aspiring musicians, publishing many articles on the lives of musicians and musical careers, alongside portraits of prominent musicians, collegiate bands across the country, and pedagogical articles. Many of the authors were musicians, teachers, or band directors, and the topics discussed included swing and orchestral music, radio, and allied musical fields.
