A short-lived publication of the Jazz Club of Brooklyn College, two issues appeared in 1943 and a single one in 1946. Edited by Leonard Levine in 1943 (the second issue appearing after he joined the US Army), and Levine, Robert Lichtman, and Bella Felsen in 1946, the term “Capsule” in the title did not intend to convey a pharmaceutical connotation but rather a “comprehensive and concise picture of the jazz world.” [See the editorial in the 1946 issue.] Jazz Capsule summarized jazz happenings at Brooklyn College and in New York more broadly. Of note is an article by the young sociologist Fred Davis on academic questions posed by jazz (issue 2) and editor Levine’s survey of jazz journalism in the final issue.
