With the masthead description “Exploring jazz in the northwest from mainstream to offbeat,” 5/4 Magazine was a tabloid-sized, newsprint publication edited by Sandra Burlingame in Seattle. Surveying the whole of the northwest – Washington State, British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana – it covered a broad spectrum of musics, including jazz and other improvised music, performance art, new music, and dance music. Artist profiles of current musicians, record and book reviews, and concert notices comprise much of the content. A regular column, “Face the Music,” discussed performances around the region. Many authors contributed to 5/4 Magazine including Bob Mariano, Joseph Murphy, John Atkins, Mike Marlin, Lynn Darroch, Laurence Svirchev, along with the editor Burlingame.
