Two issues of Interplay, “A Bay Area Magazine for Jazz & Related Music,” were published in April and May of 1981 by W. Berigan Taylor and Ralph L. Johnson, with Taylor also serving as editor. Attempting to provide a survey of music in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and elsewhere in the Bay Area, Taylor notes that the staff were able to generate a list of 60 local musicians whose work was not covered in the larger, national jazz press, but who were vital players in the local scene. As such, Interplay provides portraits of local musicians—ranging from Earl Hines to Idris Ackamoor, and an article on women in the local scene—, lists of upcoming events, and a small number of record reviews.
