Jazz Notebook was a pamphlet issued by the Jazz Appreciation Society. Around the conclusion of the Second World War, paper shortages made it difficult to publish periodicals; as such, the Society chose to publish pamphlets and short books in lieu of its journal, Jazz Record. This single 28-page “issue” was written entirely by Stanley F. Dance and consists of three sections: record reviews, largely of hot jazz and smaller combos; book reviews; and a section titled “Light and Shade” in which Dance opines on Jimmy Noone, British crooning, the American journals Metronome and Down Beat, trombonists, and quibbles with the Jazz Appreciation Society booklet Jazz.
