The successor to Hip, Jazz Digest was also edited and published by Ed Steane. Steane chose to close Hip and begin Jazz Digest anew due to rising costs and a desire to publish fewer issues per year. Regardless, Steane still published on a near monthly basis, reviewing large numbers of recently-released recordings with the same group as before: Bob Porter, Bob Rusch, George Hall, Wayne Jones, Russ Chase, Bill Korst, Dennis Hendley, Dick Spottswood, J. R. Taylor, Dan Morgenstern, and Steve Moffic. Jazz Digest’s reviews were well-written, incisive, knowledgable, and opinionated.
For all of the commitment that Steane and his contributors showed, economics ultimately forced Jazz Digest to close in June of 1974. Not long after, regular Jazz Digest contributor Bob Rusch began his own project, Cadence, which would become the great forum for record reviews, interviews, and so much more.
