Not Just Jazz

Not Just Jazz was produced by Randy and Elli Fordyce from 1980 to 1985. Continuing a short-lived newsletter published in Houston as Just Jazz in 1980, Not Just Jazz expanded the format with articles on art, literature, and humor. Ten issues appear to have been published from 1980 to 1981, with a volume 2 no. 1 appearing in 1983 and issue 1 of “life three” appeared in 1985. Should other issues be located, these will be added to RIPM Jazz Periodicals, also.

Contributors to Not Just Jazz included Randy Fordyce, Harold Danko, Julie Lyonn Lieberman, Jack Penha, and Mike Morgenstern. Much of the content focused on jazz of the late 1970s and early 1980s, with multiple articles on Chick Corea, including an interview with him in 1983, appearing alongside interviews with Max Roach and Dave Frishberg. Articles on art, creativity, and spiritualism appear, also. Unfortunately attempts to grow the magazine to achieve a national distribution did not succeed.
