Four issues of Disc: The Record Magazine appeared between August and November 1946. Produced by Triad Magazines, Inc., a mass-market publisher, Disc was a commercial endeavor intended for fans of popular music and culture. Its advisory board, declared in the first issue, included Milton Cross, Benny Goodman, Mrs. Charles Guggenheimer, James Melton, Patrice Munsel, Frank Sinatra, Kate Smith, Sigmund Spaeth, and Paul Whiteman. The first issue contains eleven short letters of congratulations from well-known musicians.
Each issue contained some seventy pages of content which largely focused on prominent jazz and classical recording artists, providing illustrated profiles, reviews of new records, and copious photography. It is not disclosed why Disc failed, though perhaps the fact that its competitor recording magazines were free from record dealers, or charged much less for a subscription, played a role in Disc’s short life.
